Horror is pessimism at its bleakest. Worst-case scenario. The darker side of reality. The glass half-empty. The situation unfathomable. In Black Bubbles, Kelli Owen presents classic genre tropes—ghosts, murderers, zombies, what you'd expect (sans sharks)—but it's the characters, rather than the tropes, that experience the story, speak of the horrors, and sometimes survive the inevitable.
Sometimes.
A decades-old crime shocks a family as evidence points to one of their own… An ancient evil hitchhikes its way to freedom… A child has an unusual fascination with decay… A woman excuses premeditation… Death takes a holiday… Science and good intentions make horrific bedfellows… A man hides from nightmares that invade his waking world…
Kelli Owen's first collection gathers over 60,000 words, including a handful of out-of-print, difficult-to-find previously published work, a plethora of new pieces, story notes, drawings inspired by the title story, and an introduction by the legendary Thomas Monteleone.

Hmmm. Scary? Yep. Creepy? Some of them, ultimately so. Horrible? Well, yes, in a convoluted good and bad way. Good horror, but bad because it was so gritty it hurt. Quite different, this collection of short stories touches all the "creep factor" bases at least once. A few were downright gruesome, others thought provoking, still others memorable. Because of the creative touch revealed in this collection, I'm starting to appreciate short stories again, as I have not for a long time. Thanks for that gift!Product details

Black Bubbles edition by Kelli Owen Thomas Monteleone Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Although I'm not the biggest fan of short story collections when I was offered the chance to review this e-book from Kelli Owen I jumped at the chance. Having read two of her previous e-books (The Neighbourhood and Waiting Out Winter) I knew that it could be a good collection and I was not disappointed.
Within Black Bubbles are 21 short stories which are all easy to read and cover a good variety of topics ranging from the morbid and heartbreaking to the currently popular zombies, but what makes this collection different is that every tale is told in an original manner and there are plenty of twists and surprises which makes this a refreshing read in a world where there are plenty of good books easily available. It was because of this approach which led to me enjoying every story within the collection and that is something which is hard to achieve.

Black Bubbles
So to sum things up; this is one very good collection of horror themed short stories which has been written in a way that allows for them to be consumed and enjoyed easily. The characters in each story are believable and helps turn this into a real page turner. If you've not read anything by Kelli Owen yet then now is a good chance to try her work.
It's rare that I'll give a collection of short stories 5 stars. There are nearly always one or two that don't work for one reason or another. Not the case here. Kelli Owen's Black Bubbles is filled with gems.
The prose is lyrical at times, allowing the reader to relish every word. While reading one story in the collection, I noted, it was as if Kelli was seeing things from the corner of her eye and getting those details down on the page.
There's a lot of variety in this collection, all with the intent to disturb or frighten the reader. In Shadow of Skepticism, a couple of paranormal investigators encounter more than they want to. There's also Kelli's first foray into the world of Zombies, with atypical results, in Feeding the Animals.
It all wraps up with the title story, Black Bubbles, a totally original concept of what happens when too many children are taking meds for AD/HD and are no longer having nightmares.
I also really enjoyed Kelli's Notes after each short, where she would relate that story's inspiration.
If you subscribe to Prime, you can read Black Bubbles for free as one of your monthly lending library selections. Even if you don't read it for free, it's well worth the price of admission for hours of good solid horror.
Black Bubbles
Since it's listed as "horror", and reviewers describe it as horror, I was expecting even the teensiest bit of horror. I've read halfway through the short stories and they're about as horrifying as watching a trailer for The Mighty Ducks.
Despite my disappointment, I can still note that the author is very talented, and weaves a very good narrative. She's worth the read.
There's a story for everyone in this collection. Kelli's stories are smart and keep you guessing. Loved the commentary at the end of each which gave insight into how she creates.
If you like horror short stories this is a very good book to get.
In all honesty I don't think there was a story that didnt keep me entertained.
If your not familiar with Kelli Owens work this is a good book to get as it covers many genres of horror
Character driven horror as only Kellie Owen can provide. So many "what if" scenarios. And the writing...top notch! Real edge of your seat page turning. I loved them all.
I was so captivated by the short stories in "Black Bubbles" by Kelli Owen! I read this twice and I am thinking about a third time. Kelli's ability to write like no other author fascinates me. It was great to read something, that didn't make me feel like, I was forcing myself through it, just to say I read it. I so wanted more. That is why I went back again. Aside from Stephen King, Mary San Giovani, and Brian Keene, I am not inclined to re-read. Get this book you won't be sorry. KELLI- MORE PLEASE!
